Other Recent Changes: Wow, Look What Happened to Teams April 1st!
Last year in the EEU and Switzerland Microsoft was forced to change the pricing model to Teams after some filings by companies like Slack and Salesforce stating that it was unfair trade practices to give it away for free. Basically making it nearly impossible for anyone to compare Teams to other collaboration tools that cost added investment when everyone already owned Teams with their 365.
So fast forward to the surprise we were given on April 1st when the US followed suit and lowered the cost of the 365 licensing models BUT removed Teams as a feature. This created a stand-alone sku for Teams at added cost.
At first, you look at this and go WOW another price increase. Well, it could be. But if you look at this through another lens, you know you can save money by excluding Teams from users who have no use for chat, collaboration, or conference calling. This adds another layer of complexity when designing out your renewals, but a trusted partner can help.
Add to this the new Teams Premium features: (Yes this is an add-on, too)
- AI-Powered Meeting Summaries: Get intelligent recaps of every meeting.
- Personalized Experiences: Create richer collaboration experiences tailored to your audience.
- Enhanced Security: Safeguard confidential information.
- Advanced Virtual Appointments: Host high-quality webinars.
- Professionally Produced Town Halls: Deliver large-scale events.
- Custom 3D Immersive Experiences: Elevate engagement.
Now if you want to get the above, but also want to get Copilot, you don’t need the add-on for Premium, just the add-on for Teams. Here is some of what you get in Teams with Copilot 365.
Copilot in Microsoft Teams Chat and Channels
-
- Purpose: Copilot helps you quickly catch up on conversations by summarizing main points, action items, and decisions.
- Functionality: It references information from the message thread where it’s opened, with a 30-day history1.
- Benefit: No need to scroll through lengthy threads; Copilot provides concise insights.
Advanced AI Capabilities for Unscheduled Calls and Chat Conversations
-
- Purpose: Copilot now assists you during unscheduled phone calls and written chat discussions.
- Capabilities:
- Stay on Top: Copilot helps you stay informed about ongoing discussions.
- Capture Important Information: It identifies critical details.
- Follow Up on Action Items: Ensures nothing falls through the cracks2.
Improved Prompts and Personalization
-
- Context-Aware Suggestions: Copilot offers better prompts, including details specific to you, such as colleagues, meetings, and files.
- Chat History Access: You can see your Copilot chat history.
- Prompt Library via Copilot Lab: Access a library of prompts for enhanced productivity.
Unified Experience Across Platforms
-
- Consistent Functionality: The new Copilot in Teams aligns with the experience from com, Bing, and copilot.microsoft.com.
- Easier to Find and Use: The pinned Copilot app is readily accessible above your chats in Teams3.
So yes, going forward, you need to review your use cases for Teams. If you already have an agreement in place, your pricing isn’t changing right away but you can add Teams premium or Copilot to your existing subscription.
Microsoft has become a bit more complex when it was already complex, you need an expert to guide you through this structure to make sure your use cases match your subscriptions, not only for Teams and Copilot but also for content storage, security, workflow automation, and many other valuable assets that live inside the Microsoft 365 Suite of products.
